National Flag Day was celebrated throughout Ethiopia on July 5, 2008. The historic and colorful event was the first ever to be celebrated in the nation.
In the Harari National Regional State, the event was celebrated at the 'Imam Ahmed' stadium in the presence of thousands of local residents, senior government officials, members of the defense forces, as well as various members of the community in the Region State.
The speaker of the Harari State Council, Ato Abdumalik Beker, in his speech to commemorate the event stated that the nations and nationalities of Ethiopia have forged unity on the basis of mutual respect, common interest, equality and mutual progress. He stressed the fact that such an event would help consolidate the unity of Ethiopia’s nations and nationalities, build national consensus and tolerance, as well as expedite development and democracy in the nation.
Ato Mohammed Shash, Director General of the Harari Millennium Secretariat Office, for his part said that the national Flag Day is an event that will enhance the ongoing efforts being made to develop our nation and wherein a pledge is made to work harder to extricate poverty and realize the Ethiopia Renaissance.
'Debub Mesrak Eze' brass band played different tunes to entertain the crowd. In a colorful scene, Harari National Regional State officials hoisted the Ethiopian flag and that of the various Regional States. The celebration concluded with the band playing the national anthem.
